Happy Accidents

Life does not always go as planned. This is particularly relevant when trying to overcome the various hurdles inherent in making an indie film. Sometimes the best laid plans are thrown out the window because of unavoidable circumstance. You do your best to push forward, and if you’re lucky, things turn out for the better in spite of those challenges.

sj sunsetOn Sunday, we had planned on filming a scene between Ian and Isabel at the Griffith Park Travel Town Transportation Museum. Because of a last minute scheduling conflict, we weren’t able to make it to the park until 4:45pm, and unbeknownst to us, the park closed 15 minutes later. While that killed our plans for the scene, we took advantage of the golden hour and shot a brief moment between Ian and Izabel with the sun setting behind them. As you can see from the photo below, the sky was too perfect to let that go to waste.

Trying to salvage the day, we traveled down to Sunset Blvd to find a suitable location to film the conversation between the two characters. With nowhere particular in mind, we stumbled across the brightly lit storefront of Pull My Daisy. Shooting through the window, the headlights of the passing cars created a dazzling effect on the glass.  Watching the footage later that night, we were all stunned at how amazing the scene turned out, and how fortunate we were for the serendipitous change in plans.

First, he cast his friend Thomas Greene in the role of Alex, and later approached budding actor Colin Bryne for the role of Ian. Little did Jesus know, Thomas and Colin are not only roommates, but close friends with the perfect chemistry to play two brothers sharing not only a band but a love interest. Even in our small Silverlake community, it seems like too much of a coincidence. But in the end, you can’t argue with fate.
